Listening to Surah Al-Kahf on Friday

Fatwaa ID: 519

Question:
السلام عليكم و رحمة اللّه و بركاته

Mufti sahib,

This question is about a group of people who gather to read Surah Kahf and take turns reciting a page each. If there was someone who was not following along by reading silently to themselves, but simply listening (perhaps because they aren’t yet comfortable with reading Quran), will they still get the reward of reading surah Kahf on a friday?

Jazakallahu khair

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

The virtues of reciting Surah Al-Kahf on Friday are for those who recite it. The Hadith is express regarding this (قرأ). Recitation requires that one verbally recites such that he can hear himself. If a person simply listens or even recites parts and listens to the other parts only, then he would not be acquiring the virtues.
Allaah Ta’aala is ever-merciful. If a person listens because he is unable to read, it is hoped that he too will be rewarded. It would be advisable that as he listens, he should verbally read along as well.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
