Listening to the Qur’aan while working or sleeping

Fatwaa ID: 740

Question
Assalamualaikum wrwb, I’ve heard that when one is listening to someone recite quran, one should be attentive to it. So, in that case, would it be jaiz to listen to quran recitation while working/studying or to fall asleep? And during other similar cases.

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

That is correct. It is necessary to listen attentively to the recitation of the Qur’aan. Accordingly, if one is not listening attentively, then it will not be permissible to use the Qur’aan as a background sound. That will be deemed to be disrespectful to the Qur’aan. One may opt for nasheeds instead.

As for listening to it while going to sleep, if one is attentively listening and thereafter is overtaken by sleep, then that is permissible.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
