What is the ruling on one who lives in a rural place where there would be no nearby muslims? If one is offered a job as a physician in a rural island in Hawaii where there would be few people, and likely no other muslims, is it permissible to live there? What about in regards to Jummah, as there would be no Jummah prayer within 100 miles?
JazakAllah wa khayr
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.
When choosing a place to live, one should look for neighborhoods and places that are conducive to his imaan. He should look for a place which is good and enhancing for his spirituality. The Muslims are brothers to one another and that brotherhood is strengthened by living together and praying together. When making such a big decision, one should consider the larger picture. Is it good for the Islam and spirituality of the individual, his children and the wife? Money or job is not the only aspect of consideration.
While it may be permissible to move to such a rural place, it is unadvisable. Look for a place with some Muslims. Do da’wah while there. That is a responsibility on you. In regards to Jumu’ah, if the conditions of Jumu’ah are found, then it will be necessary to establish Jumu’ah. If the conditions of Jumu’ah are not met, then Jumu’ah will not be necessary.
And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
