Loser donates to charity

Fatwaa ID: 565

Assalamu Alaikum Wa RahmatuAllahi Wa Barakatuhu

I know betting is haram, but what if the causes are halal. For example me and my friend play a game of basketball and we say whoever loses needs to donate 100$ to the winners charity. Is that still haram?

Also is tehre any difference between the different madhabs

In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

At the outset, gambling is impermissible irrespective of cause or reason. Allaah Ta’aala does not need us to engage in haraam to provide some good.
Nevertheless, the scenario in the enquired situation is permissible. It does not constitute gambling as none of the sides are profiting off this bet.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
