Lowering your voice for Sajdah verse, jewelry with dog face

Fatwaa ID: 641

Question:
Assalamualikum, growing up I was taught to read sajdah ayahs silently even if the rest of the tilawah was read aloud. Is there a basis for this and is this allowed? Also, do you have to have wudu to perform sajdatut tilawah? If I recite an ayah without realizing that it’s a sajda ayah and I don’t make sajdatut tilawah, will I get sins?

A question for someone else:
Someone bought gold bangles that have 2 very small faces of dogs in the design. When buying them they weren’t sure if they were faces of dogs, but after looking at them very closely later they realized that they were. Since then they have stopped wearing them but they are wondering if they are allowed to wear them in Salah and/or outside of when they are in Salah. It will require a lot of money to get them broken and made into something else so they are not sure what to do with them.

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

  1. It is disliked and disrespectful to recite the sajdah verse inaudibly when the entire recitation was audible. Each sajdah is a step closer to Allaah Ta’aala. The shaytaan did not do one sajdah and was thus eternally doomed. However, the jurists suggest that if the people around the reciter are not prepared for sujood, then in consideration of them he may recite a larger section which includes the sajdah verse inaudibly.
The general requirements of salaah, such as wudhu, are applicable to Sajdah Tilaawah.
It is advisable to perform extra sajdahs with the intention of covering any missed or forgotten sajdahs.
  2. If the face of the dog is small such that it cannot be seen while standing, then one will be excused to wear it and also perform salaah with it.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
