Lucky draws, Maghrib, hijaab and parents

Fatwaa ID: 2038

Assalamu alaykum sheikh!
Here’s the next batch of questions:

1) Are lucky draws allowed? For example you complete a challenge to be entered into a draw in which you can win prizes.

2) What is the permissible time frame to pray Maghrib after the Athan has started? Ex. Sunset time was a 4:40, can I pray at 5:40?

3) In Islam it’s obligatory for women to wear hijab but my parents are against it and won’t let me saying I’m too young. And it’s also important to respect and honour your parents. So in this case is it permissible for me to go against their wishes and follow the command of Allah or should I take another course of action?

In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

  1. Lucky draws are permissible provided that you do not have to pay to enter. If you have to pay to enter, then that is a form of gambling and thus impermissible. Completing challenges to enter does not count as a form of payment.
  2. Maghrib Salaah is valid from the time it comes in until the time of ‘Ishaa. However, it is reprehensible to unnecessarily delay it until the end time. It should be performed immediately as soon as the time comes in while the sky retains its glow.
    • May Allaah Ta’aala bless you and guide your parents. Once you become baaligh, you are like an adult. You are no longer young. The laws of Shari’ah become fully applicable on you.
Hijaab is an obligation. The laws of hijaab cannot be violated even if the parents command you to do so. It will be necessary to go against their wishes. You will not be sinful for that. Rasulullaah ﷺ said,
لا طاعة لمخلوق في معصية الخالق
“There is no obedience to creation while disobeying the Creator.” [Ahmad 1095]
At the same time, ensure that you remain kind and respectful to your parents. They will perhaps rebuke you or say things you do not wish to hear. Let it slide. Do not raise your voice over theirs. Make du’aa for their hidaayah.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
