Lying for Deen purposes

Fatwaa ID: 2167

Is it allowed to lie for deen purposes ? I’m going umrah and my college will fine as it’s not authorised absence, if one lies and says he is sick to avoid having to pay a fee would this be permissible as it’s for good and not for bad ?

In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

No. It is not allowed to lie for “Deen purposes”. Lying is haraam. The prohibition is applicable to whether it is “for good” or “for bad”. We should not justify wrong actions to suite our nafs.

It is not permissible for you to lie about your absence from college. If you are unable to get authorized time off, then you should postpone your ‘umrah trip. ‘Umrah is nafl but lying is haraam.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
