Making du’aa against someone

Fatwaa ID: 465

Question:
Salam alaykum
Is it allowed to make badua against a non Muslim who is continuous causing us grief with their thongue?

Is it allowed to make badua to a Muslim causing us grief with their tongue?

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

It is unadvisable to make du’aa against anyone, Muslim or non-Muslim. Instead, du’aa should be made for hidaayah of that person. When Nabi (S) was requested by the Sahaabah (R) to make du’aa against some of the enemies of Islam, he responded, “I was not sent as a curser; I was sent as a mercy.” In another similar incident, he made du’aa instead for their guidance. Notwithstanding this, if a victim makes du’aa against his oppressor, then he will be justified and his du’aas are likely to be accepted. However, if the “oppressor” is not deserving of that du’aa, it will come back to the one who made the du’aa.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
