Making Du’aa Maghfirah for Nabi ﷺ

Fatwaa ID: 1051

Question:
السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته

Can a person make Dua-E-Maghfirah for Nabi ﷺ

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

At the outset, Nabi ﷺ is infallible. Allaah Ta’aala protected Nabi ﷺ from committing any sin. Allaah Ta’aala emphasized this in the Qur’aan by saying that He had pardoned all his past and future sins. Despite not being in need of istighfaar, Nabi ﷺ was ever grateful and humble to Allaah Ta’aala that he would make istighfaar 100 times daily. This is a reminder and an example for us from the best role model.

Nevertheless, it is permissible to make du’aa for the maghfirah of Nabi ﷺ. It is narrated in Saheeh Muslim that once Sayyiduna ‘Abdullaah ibn Sarjis (R) made du’aa for Nabi ﷺ saying, “O Rasulullaah! May Allaah envelope you with His Maghfirah”. Nabi ﷺ responded by saying, “And you as well”.

One should focus on making istighfaar for himself firstly and then the Muslims at large. As for Nabi ﷺ, send salutations and blessings upon him in abundance.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
