Making one’s niece a mahram to one’s son

Fatwaa ID: 2085

السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته
Hope to find you in the best of health.
I wanted to know how to make my sister in law’s daughter a mahram for my son. Would it be enough if I gave my niece my breast milk ? They are both breastfeeding infants right now.

In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

If you give your niece your breastmilk prior to two lunar years of age, then that would establish mahram relationship between her and you and thereby your children as well. You would be her foster mother and your children will be her foster siblings. This mahram relationship however would not be extended to your niece’s siblings unless they too are breastfed by you or given your milk. Likewise, your children would be mahram to this niece only, not her siblings.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
