Making up skipped salaahs

Fatwaa ID: 1938

Question:
Assalamualikum, I haven’t been particular with my Salah for the past couple of years due to the western environment. Now that I am particular Alhamdullilah, I need to make up many Salah. How do I calculate for this and what steps should I take?
(I am turning 16 soon and I am unsure of when I hit puberty)

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

May Allaah Ta’aala bless you and keep you steadfast upon the Deen. Successful is the one who navigates himself and remains connected to Allaah Ta’aala despite all the attempts from the world to disconnect him. It is not easy, but that is why the reward is so great. Being able to spend the youthful ages in the worship of Allaah Ta’aala is a great honor for which one will be granted the Shade of Allaah Ta’aala.

In the enquired situation, you will have to apply your due diligence and make an estimated guess. Do the same with when you may have become baaligh. You may choose a greater number. Anything extra you pray will count as nafl so there is no loss. Once you determine or decide on a number, gradually yet actively work on reaching that. For instance, add one salaah before and/or after each current fardh salaah. May Allaah Ta’aala make it easy for you.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
