Question:
السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته
Is tying your hair into a manbun permissible for a man? How about braids? Both scenarios with the intention that you are not imitating the Kuffaar. At times, longer hair tied up is easier to manage.
Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.
- It is permissible for men to tie their hair into manbuns. It is narrated regarding some of the Sahaabah (R) that they would tie their hair. However, when performing salaah, it should be undone. It is reprehensible for men to pray with their hair tied. When tying the hair, one should ensure that a style specific to the women is not adopted.
- It is permissible for men to braid their hair provided that it does not resemble that of the womenfolk nor the immoral and degenerate ones. When performing salaah, the braids should be undone. It is reprehensible for men to perform salaah with their hair braided.
And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
