Masbooq and sajdah sahw

Fatwaa ID: 1848

Question:
Assalam Alaikum. If we join the jamaat late (meaning like second rakat) and the imam make a mistake so he did one Salam and then sajda sahw, should we follow him into sajda sahw and stand up to complete our prayer after the final tasleem or should we stand up after the initial tasleem and do our own sajda sahw?

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

A masbooq/latecomer will follow the imaam and perform the Sajdah Sahw with him. However, he will not make the Salaam before Sajdah Sahw with him. If he does make Salaam with him, then the salaah will be invalidated if he recalled at that moment that he has outstanding rak’ahs to make up. If he did not recall that and made Salaam accidentally, then the salaah will remain valid.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
