Question:
Assalam o Alaikum
I happened to travel over 100 miles round trip (to attend funeral) meaning I was musafir
When I arrived, imam was in rukooh already so I joined the salat and found it was last rakaat when imam said Salaam
I didn’t say Salam and completed my 2 rakaat and said salam thinking I am musafir
Now I am questioning if I should have read 4 rakaats instead of 2?
Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.
In principle, if a musaafir prays behind a muqeem imaam, then he will follow him and perform the salaah in full. Similarly, if he comes and joins the salaah late as a masbooq, then too he will complete salaah in full. In the enquired situation, you are supposed to perform 4 rak’ahs, not 2. You must make qadhaa of the said salaah. Qadhaa however will be 2 rak’ahs only in the enquired situation.
And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
