Memorizing the Qur’an but fear that the intention may not be right

Fatwaa ID: 1591

Question:
I want to memorize the Quran for the right intention, however I fear that part of the reason I am doing it is so I can be the imam at my school. Is it permissible for me to refuse to be the imam at school, even if I know more Quran than other Muslims at my school?

جزاك الله خيرا

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

May Allaah Ta’aala grant us all sincerity in our actions. May He make us from his dear ones.

You should memorize the Qur’aan. It is the greatest thing you can do. Your rank in the Hereafter will be in accordance to how much you have memorized. When memorizing, renew and rectify your intention daily. The shaytaan will come and try to swerve you from your goal or contaminate your intention. Stay focused.

If you are asked to lead salaah, go ahead. Do not refuse. Understand it to be the people honoring the Qur’aan, not you. Tell yourself that if they knew my reality, they would not even speak to me. At the same time, remember that leading salaah is a responsibility. You are taking the responsibility and burden of the salaah of everyone behind you. Hence, rectify your intention even there.

Make du’aa for sincerity and humbleness. Be grateful for the honor Allaah Ta’aala has given you. Make istighfaar for not doing as perfectly as you should be doing. If you continue with these three things regularly, it will be of great benefit.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
