Menses came just before iftaar

Fatwaa ID: 2226

If a woman starts menstruating mid way through the day while fasting, is her fast considered broken?

Is there any leeway to maintain the fast if there are a few hours remaining until Maghreb?

In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

If a woman starts menstruating while fasting, then her fast will break immediately. This is applicable even if it was a minute before iftaar time. She will have to make qadhaa of that day afterwards. While this may apparently seem to be a waste of one’s efforts, that is not the case. Allaah Ta’aala will certainly reward her greatly.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
