Minimum age to lead Taraaweeh

Fatwaa ID: 441

Question:
Assalamualaikum mufti Sab
Please answer this question.

At what age hafiz can lead taraweeh. If he has not reached puberty. Can he lead when he is 14 years old.

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

According to the Hanafi legal school, a haafiz may lead salaah, including Taraaweeh, once he becomes baaligh, i.e., experiences a nocturnal emission. The exact age will differ from person to person. If he does not experience one by the age of 15 lunar years, then he will be regarded to be baaligh once he reaches that age. In the enquired situation, it is not clear if the 14 year old is baaligh yet or not. If needed, convert his age into Islamic lunar years and see if he has reached 15.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
