Mistakenly had iftaar early

Fatwaa ID: 1373

Urgent Question:
Asalaam Alaikum. We travelled from DC to UK with the goal of getting a connecting flight to Accra, Ghana. I was fasting and when my alarm for maghrib went, my wife woke me and asked me to break my fast. I had a sip of water and begin to asked what time is Maghreb here. Since we are not familiar with London maghrib time. I believe Maghreb comes in at I drank water around 8:40 as we are used to US marghrib time. Is my fasting still valid?
(arafah fast)

In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

May Allaah Ta’aala make your travels easy and fruitful. The fast in the enquired situation is invalid. However, you are not sinful. Qadhaa should be kept afterwards. It is hoped that you will still receive the full virtue of the blessed day.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
