Mother’s half-brother

Fatwaa ID: 1181

Question:
Assalamu aalykum ww
I pray you are well aameen
Is your mums step brother (same mum) a mahram for the daughters?
So step uncle?

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

Siblings who share a parent are half-siblings, either uterine or consanguine. Step-siblings are those who do not share either parent. The individuals you have described in the question are half-siblings (uterine) as they share the same mother. They are mahrams to each other. The children of one of them is a mahram to the half-uncle and half-aunt. As for step-siblings, they are not mahrams to each other nor are their children mahrams to their step-uncle and step-aunt. The laws of hijaab will be fully applicable.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
