Motivation to lose weight

Fatwaa ID: 1820

Assalamu alaykum wa rahmatulaahe wa barakaatuhu

If person A and person B are trying to motivate each other to lose weight and they both decided for example each week they must lose one pound, if by the end of the week that doesn’t happen for both persons or just one of the two, then they have to give the other a certain amount of money that they agreed on (money is given so its motivation to lose the weight so we don’t have to give money. If the goal isn’t reached, only then money is given to the other) is this allowed?

In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

We take note of the details of your query. The above will not be permissible. This is a form of gambling. Alternative methods of motivation should be considered.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
