Mufti Menk’s Quran as revealed is it bidah?

Fatwaa ID: 2113

Question:
Asalamulaikum recently mufti menk has partnered and came up with a book called the Quran as revealed. He has only 86 Surahs out of the whole Quran. They have changed the order of the Surahs. This book also has pictures. Is this permissible to read or should we stay away?

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

The information provided in the query above is not entirely accurate. We must be honest and truthful in all our matters. When asking for a fatwaa, one should research the matter and provide the mufti with correct information.

Nevertheless, we note that those behind this project have compiled the surahs and the verses in them in accordance to the sequence of revelation. The Makkan portion was published while the Medinan portion is yet to be published. Nonetheless, we respectfully disagree and have our reservations about this work for couple of reasons.

Firstly, it is not permissible to publish a translation of the Qur’aan or chapters therefrom without their Arabic counterparts. There are many harms and negatives to this. Secondly, adding pictures often reduces the sacredness of the Qur’aan in the eyes of the reader. Thirdly, the sequence of the mus-haf is divinely set. When a verse or surah would be revealed, Nabi ﷺ would instruct the illustrious sahaabah (R) where exactly it should be placed. There is divine wisdom in this sequence. Publishing it in a sequence other than the established, especially the verses, is problematic and may even distort the meaning. While there may perhaps have been good intents in publishing this work, it is contrary to the laws and values of the Shari’ah.

We advise you to refrain from using this work. The translation of the Qur’aan can be studied and taken from other reliable works and sources. There is no new benefit or speciality in this work in question. You will not be missing out on anything if you refrain from it. This work has not made any genuinely beneficial contribution to our rich Islamic literary tradition.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
