Musaafir muqtadee becomes imaam, istikhlaaf

Fatwaa ID: 2011

If a person is a Musaafir and is performing Salaah behind a Muqeem Imaam (standing next to the Muazzin), and the Imaams wudhu breaks and pulls the Musaafir forward to complete the Salaah, how should he complete the Salaah?

If the Imaams wudhu breaks while in Sajdah, how should the person who the Imaam puts forward go front?

In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

  1. The musaafir muqtadee who started the salaah behind a muqeem imaam will complete the salaah as he started it. If he is appointed as the imaam during the salaah for whatever reason, then he will continue with the salaah and complete it as a muqeem, i.e., four rak’ahs.
  2. The imaam will get the attention of the person whom he will appoint by gestures. If necessary, he may even drag or pull him up with minimal movement without speaking. The new imaam will continue from where the initial imaam left off. In the case where he left off at sajdah, the new imaam can say the takbeer and move on to the next posture.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
