Musaafir query, non-Muslim hairdresser

Fatwaa ID: 1382

Question:
Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu

  1. We will be travelling to a country for a month’s vacation, and will stay in one city for a week, then will be travelling to another city for a week. Then we return back to the first city and stay for 2 more weeks. Do we pray qasr for the entire duration of our stay in both the cities?
  2. Can a Muslim woman go to a non Muslim hairdresser for hair treatments?

Jazakumullahu khairan kaseera

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

  1. You will be musaafir during the first two weeks as you will be staying in each place for less than 15 days. During the second two weeks, if you stay in that city for up to 14 days, you will be musaafir. If you stay for more than that, then you will not be musaafir.
  2. The hair of a Muslim woman is ‘awrah in the presence of a non-Muslim woman. It will not be permissible for a Muslim woman to go to a non-Muslim hairdresser. If there is a genuine medical treatment prescribed by a competent medical doctor, and there are no Muslim hairdressers available to administer it, then one will be excused.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
