Musalla or masjid

Fatwaa ID: 890

السلام عليكم و رحمة الله و بركاته
Is going to the musallah the same reward as a masjid for both women and men?

In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

  1. A musalla and a masjid are not the same. A musalla does not have the same sanctity and virtue of a masjid. The laws of a masjid do not apply to a musalla. The reward of performing salaah in the masjid is greater than performing it in a musalla. One should try to go to the masjids instead of the musallas. It is unfortunate that nowadays we see musallas opening up more than masjids. The name “masjid” is often used by the people, incorrectly, to refer to these musallas. That should be avoided.
  2. The salaah of woman in the confines of her house is better than her salaah in the masjid or musalla, as expressly stated by Nabi ﷺ.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
