Muslim woman marrying a Christian man

Fatwaa ID: 1290

Question:
Salam, Is it halal in Gods eyes if a muslim woman marries a Christian man, as long as the Christian husband agrees to respects his wife’s Islamic faith and agrees to raise any children as Muslims?

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

Shari’ah has prohibited the marriage between Muslim women and non-Muslim men. Such a “marriage” will be invalid and one will be living a life of zinaa. The children from such a union will be regarded to be illegitimate. This prohibition is irrespective of whether the man agrees to raise the children as Muslim or not. There is no difference of opinion amongst the jurists in this express prohibition.
One wisdom behind this prohibition is that the father is the head of the household and the one responsible over the family. If a father is not Muslim, then there is a great possibility that the children too may not be Muslim and likewise he may even affect the wife. Islam has taken great steps to ensure that Islamic values are maintained in a marriage and is passed on to the children.

And Allaah Ta’aala Knows Best.
