Nabi (S) was unlettered

Fatwaa ID: 387

Did RasūlAllāh Sallallāhu ‘alayhi wasalam ever learn to read or write in dunyā?

In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

Rasulullaah (S) was unlettered until his demise. He did not learn to read or write. Yet, he was the most knowledgeable of all people. There are many wisdoms behind Allaah Ta’aala keeping him unlettered. No one will be able to claim that they taught Nabi (S) except Allaah Ta’aala. It strengthens the claim of prophethood and the divine nature of the Qur’aan.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
