Name: Antara

Fatwaa ID: 2043

Question:
Assalamualaikum wrwb.
What does the name Antara mean? And how is it spelled in Arabic?

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

Antara(h) is an Arabic masculine name which literally refers to the blue bottle fly or other similar flies that stay beneath the tails of larger animals. This name however is used to refer to someone who is courageous and bold. This is due to a pre-Islamic historic figure named ‘Antarah ibn Shaddaad al-‘Absi. There were a few Sahaabah (R) with this name as well. Its spelling in Arabic is عنترة.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
