Name: Fazil

Fatwaa ID: 223

Question:

1) May I please know the meaning of the name “Fazil”? Is it for boys or girls?

2) Was it the name of anyone special in Islamic history?

3) Also, will you please provide the voweled Arabic text so i know how to pronounce it properly? I am not sure if I wrote it correctly; maybe there is a “dh” or “d” sound rather than a “z” sound.

Answer:

In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

The Arabic word (فاضل) faadhil is a masculine word which means excellent, generous, honest, kind, meritorious, righteous and praiseworthy. The female version is (فاضلة) faadhilah. The English should be spelled with a “dh”. Spelling it with a “z” is incorrect.

We were unable to locate anyone in Islamic history with the name faadhil. However, it is a suitable name.

And Allaah Ta’aala Knows Best.
