Name: Jahsh

Fatwaa ID: 1562

Question:

What is the meaning of the name Jahsh? I heard it meant mule but isn’t it also a name of sahabis?

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

Jahsh means young donkey. It was a name in the time of Jaahiliyyah. People would he named after animals then. There is a Sahaabi recorded with this name, Jahsh al-Juhani (R). However, this word is now regarded to be derogatory in many cultures and it is often used to refer to someone as foolish. We advise against this name. One should choose good meaningful names.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
