Fatwaa ID: 1481

Assalaamu alaikum w.w.
Respected mufti.

What is the meaning of the name Ruqayya?

Jazakallahu khairaa

In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

Ruqayyah comes from either the Arabic word riqqah (رقة) or irtiqaa (إرتقاء). Riqqah means softness, gentleness and graciousness. Irtiqaa means to ascend and rise up. It is a suitable name.

Ruqayyah is the name of one of the honorable daughters of Rasulullaah ﷺ. She was the wife of Sayyiduna ‘Uthmaan ibn ‘Affaan (R).

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
