Nifaas query

Fatwaa ID: 1559

Question:
If a woman had 3 kids and with her first 2 kids she had only 20 days of nifas
However with her third child the first 3 days she saw nothing but afterwards she had continuous bleeding even after the 40 days
So should she consider her nifas to be 20 days since she had a adat with her first 2 children and do qada of the rest of the days or did her habit change to 40 days and anything after 40 days is considered istihada ?

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

In principle, if a woman is experiencing nifaas but this is not her first time, and the current count is more than or less than the previous, then her habit will be regarded to be changed unless she bleeds for more than 40 days. If she bleeds for more than 40 days, then her previous habit will be reinstated and qadhaa will be made for the additional days.

In the enquired situation, we understand that the lady has bled beyond the forty day mark. Hence, her previous habit of 20 days will be considered. Anything after that will be considered istihaadhah. Thus, she will make qadhaa of the salaahs from after 20 days. We understand that this may be a substantial amount to make up. She should gradually do so as convenient. She is not sinful.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
