Niyyah of qadhaa fast

Fatwaa ID: 1827

Assalam o alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu respected Mufti Sahab
If a person did a nafil fast but accidentally had iftar a couple of minutes early and then intended qada of nafil fast on another day, do they have to make the intention the night before or can they wake up in the morning ( like 9am) and make intention that today will be my qada for that nafil fast and then fast it?
Will this be valid or should they have made intention for qada of that nafil on the night before?

In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

When a nafl fast is invalidated, it becomes waajib, according to the Hanafi legal school, to make qadhaa of it. The niyyah of qadhaa fast must be made at the time of Fajr or before. It cannot be made afterwards.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
