Non-eligible person accepting zakaah

Fatwaa ID: 1380

Assalamu alaykum.
In the UK, there is an organisation that collects zakaat .and through applications the zakaat is given to students to pay for university the fees are very high in uk .
Is this permissable to take.if you’re not eligible for zakaat.

In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

Zakaah funds are solely for those who are eligible recipients. If one is not eligible to accept zakaah, then it is haraam for him to take it. In the enquired situation, the organization in question will obviously determine eligibility based on the applications. It is haraam to lie or provide false information to appear eligible. It should be noted that one who knowingly takes zakaah funds while being ineligible has committed a grave oppression. He is taking a portion of Hellfire for himself.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
