Non-Muslim in-laws and mahram issue

Fatwaa ID: 1803

Question:
Assalamualaikum wrwb. If I get married to a Muslim man who has non Muslim parents, would they be my mahram or would I have to do pardah from them?

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

May Allaah Ta’aala guide him and the family to Islam. May He keep the others steadfast upon Islam.

Mahram relationships are established through blood, foster (breastfeeding) and marriage. It is not necessary for a person to be Muslim in order to be or become a mahram. Accordingly, the non-Muslim parents of one’s spouse will be mahrams. However, modesty must be maintained in all situations.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
