Oath affecting the family afterwards

Fatwaa ID: 575

Question:
Assalam alaikum mufti saab if we take oath on Quran, does it affect our wife and children afterwards in their lives afterwards if we do not oblige by the oath??

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

At the outset, although effective, it is inappropriate to take an oath by the Qur’aan. If one has to take an oath, then it should be in the name of Allaah Ta’aala. Oaths should not be taken for petty issues. Nevertheless, the onus and harms of not fulfilling an oath is on the one who took the oath. It does not extend nor affect his family. Each person is responsible for his own actions. If he is unable to fulfill the oath for whatever reason, then he must give kaffaarah and make sincere tawbah and istighfaar.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
