Oath of desperation

Fatwaa ID: 1267

Assalamualaikum, i made a oath to Allah out of desperation, afterwards I calmed down, do i still have keep the oath?

In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

Shari’ah advises the importance of being careful with one’s words. Just because you are in a desperate situation, that does not sanction you to say things haphazardly. Likewise, that does not absolve you from fulfilling it. When a Muslim takes an oath, he must honor it. Taking the name of Allaah Ta’aala is not something minor.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
