Oath to not do something or become a kaafir

Fatwaa ID: 424

Question:
Asalaamu alaikum mufti sahab. Hope you are well. Sorry to disturb but i had a question. If a wife tells husband to put his hands on Quran and say “i will not do this certain thing Allah kasam (swear) or i am not muslim” and he does that thing again then is his imaan still intact and if not what should be done.

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

Being a Muslim is not a matter of play. It is extremely foolish for the wife to have pushed the husband to utter the above statement. It is even more foolish and a sign of the husband’s vulnerability to have submitted to the foolish demands of his wife. Nevertheless, in the enquired situation, to be on the same side, they should both repeat their shahaadah again and make istighfaar and tawbah. In the future, they should refrain from such folly.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
