Oil, cream, deodorant, blanket and burqa’ in ihraam

Fatwaa ID: 1174

Question:
Is it permissible to use fragrance free creams, deodorant/roll on or soap in the state of Ihraam

And is it fine if ones blanket touches the face (for ladies) or covers the feet (for men)

What about a burqa that’s long so the hands end up getting covered

And what about olive oil if the men use to prevent chafing

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

  1. It is permissible to use fragrance free non-scented creams, deodorants, roll ons and soaps while in the state of ihraam. If any of these contain scent or fragrance, then that will not be permissible.
  2. No. One may cover himself with a blanket while in ihraam but the face must remain uncovered. The head too must remain uncovered for men. As for the feet, it may be covered with the blanket for men and women.
  3. In general, the hands of one’s garments should not be excessively long. Nevertheless, if the hands get covered, that will not necessitate any penalty. According to the Hanafi legal school, a woman in ihraam may even wear gloves, although it is better to avoid.
  4. Unscented natural olive oil may be used while in the state of ihraam.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
