Opening the Qur’aan to random page for guidance

Fatwaa ID: 1720

Question:
Aslam alaykum. I see some muslims practice a mehtod where they open the quran to a random page and read it for guidance. They do not read in sequence rather every day they simply open to a random page in search for the truth. Is it permissible to use such a method ?

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

The Qur’aan is full of wisdom and guidance. Each and every verse is a source of that. There is nothing wrong in opening to a random page and benefitting from that. However, one should note that many verses may be directly connected to its previous or following verse. Hence, the context will have to be considered. While the above may be beneficial, a person should also try to read and study the Qur’aan from its beginning to its end.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
