Paid advertising on Facebook and other social media platform

Fatwaa ID: 2191

Assalamualaikum, my question is related to this verse

“And cooperate in righteousness and piety, but do not cooperate in sin and aggression. And fear Allah ; indeed, Allah is severe in penalty.”

[al-Maa’idah 5:2]

The fuqaha’ have stated that it is haram to sell things that may be used to help in committing sin, such as selling grapes to one who will make wine from them, or selling weapons at times of turmoil, and so on.

So my question is would it be permissible to pay for advertising on platform like Facebook and Google? Assuming that the product is halal to sell .

For example someone with a product or service will pay facebook or google money for them to advertise his products on the platform through ads. As corporation like Facebook and Google contains haram things and may be promoting haram so would this be helping them in evil by paying them for something or would this be considered simple business ?

Maybe you can refer to things like whether or not Islamic government during the rule of sahabas did business with non Muslim kings that allowed haram.

In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

We take note of the details of your query. We commend you for your concern to ensure that your actions are Shari’ah compliant. May Allaah Ta’aala bless you.

It is permissible to advertise your product or service on platforms like Facebook or Google. You are paying them for a permissible service. You are not responsible for how they use that money nor are you responsible for the other things that they may advertise or promote. This would not count as assisting in sin. Your interaction with them is limited to your product or service being advertised. As long as that is halaal, then the promotion of that will also be halaal.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
