Pay interest when paying taxes

Fatwaa ID: 922

Assalamu alaikum,
If you owe money for taxes and you want to pay it in installments but they charge interest, is that permissible if you cannot afford to pay it at one shot?

In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

May Allaah Ta’aala make it easy for you. The fee charged for paying in installments is interest. It is not permissible to opt for this option. You should have planned from before and kept some funds away for your taxes. In the enquired situation where you failed to plan ahead, you should consider taking an interest free loan from your friends or family. Paying interest is not something small and easy. It is grave and heavy. All other means should be considered instead.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
