Paying below minimum wage

Fatwaa ID: 446

Question:
Salams
When the government stipulates a national minimum wage in a country, is it permissible to pay your staff below the minimum wages?

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

A minimum wage is in place by the government to ensure that the employees are paid a suitable amount and they are not abused. The minimum wage itself, in most cases, is less than what is needed to live a decent life. You should follow the laws of your country. You should not pay your staff less than the minimum. That is oppressive. You should treat your staff well and pay them adequately. Fear Allaah Ta’aala in regards to them. You will be accountable for this on the Day of Judgment.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
