Paying off someone’s gold loan taken on interest

Fatwaa ID: 2204

Can a son pay off the gold loan taken on interest by his father,as he wants to gift his mothe,r her gold back. Will he be held accountable in doing so. For paying the interest money ?

Jazakallah khair.

Gold loan : people taken money as a loan by depositing gold with less interest rates.

Can a son pay off the debts with interest taken by his father on his mother’s gold. Will he be held accountable for it on the day of judgement for it.

In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

May Allaah Ta’aala give your honorable father hidaayah. May He bless them with long blissful lives.

As you have correctly indicated, such a loan is haraam. A person is engaging in war with Allaah Ta’aala and His Messenger ﷺ. We advise you to reminder your father of this with kindness and wisdom. Make du’aa for his forgiveness as well as your mother’s.

We commend you for your concern and your desire to help out. You may pay the loan amount back on behalf of your father but not the interest. Alternatively, you may gift your father a lumpsum amount which he may then use to pay off his loans. In this case, you will not be responsible for the interest. In either case, you will be rewarded for assisting your parents and also for helping them come out of haraam.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
