Question:
Assalamu alaikum
Does mahr need to be paid in full before the nikkah?
Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.
Mahr does not have to be paid before the nikaah. It may be paid at the time of the nikaah. In regards to paying it in full at that time, this is left to the discretion of the bride. If she demands for it to be paid in full prior to consummation, then that is her right. However, if she agrees for it to be deferred, in full or partially, then that is permissible. She may do that. She should be considerate of his financial situation.
And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
