Pending payment and zakaah

Fatwaa ID: 2223

Question:
Assalāmu ʿalaykum wa raḥmatullāhi wa barakātuh

A person needs to pay their zakat. They had ordered 2 large value things.

The payment for both is partiall paid, the rest to be completed after zakat date.

Will zakat have to be paid on the the remainder of the payment which has not yet been discharged?

Jazākumullāhu khayran wa ʾahsan al-jazāʾ fi ‘d-dārayn

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

We understand that the items in question have been purchased and payments were partially made. The remainder of the amount owed to the seller is thus a debt. Accordingly, the owed amount will be deductible from the zakaah calculation.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
