Pet food

Fatwaa ID: 1852

Is it ok to buy cat/dog food which

  • may contain pork
  • if no pork then may contain non zabihah non halal chicken meat for cats and dogs

Jazakallahu Khair for your guidance.

In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

It is necessary to feed one’s pet halaal food. The issue is not regarding what the pet is eating as the laws of Shari’ah are not applicable to them, but rather the one feeding. It is impermissible to provide anyone or anything with haraam food. However, in regards to pets, there is a dispensation in respect to the contents of the food. If majority of the ingredients in the pet food is halaal, it will be permissible to purchase such products and feed them to one’s pet. However, if majority of the ingredients are haraam, it will not be permissible to purchase or feed them to one’s pet. One should opt for seafood predominant or vegan options.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
