Praying behind a Mahdavi

Fatwaa ID: 1851

Asalamualikum. My question is in regardd to people who identify as Mahdavi. Many of my relatives regard themselves as Mahdavi. They follow Islam like any other Muslim, however, they add to the shahada by saying, “ La ilaha illlallah muhammad rasulallah, Allahu ilahuna Muhammad nabiyyuna, Al Quran wal Mahdi imamuna aamanna wa saddaqna.” They believe Imam Mahdi has come and passed away.

Is it permissible to pray Salah behind these people? I don’t want to seem disrespectful by not praying with them, however, I am afraid that my Salah will not be valid if I pray behind them.

Jazakallah khair.

In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

May Allaah Ta’aala give hidaayah to your relatives and bless them with Islam. Anyone who ascribes to the Mahdavi faith or sect is a kaafir. He is out of the fold Islam. It is not permissible to pray salaah behind them. It is not permissible to eat their food. It is not permissible to get married with them.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.

Respected and Honorable Scholars of Islam.

Question 1) what do the honorable ulamaa say about this topic – whether the Mahdi as promised in the sacred Ahadith has already come and gone from this world or whether Mahdi has not yet come.

Question 2) During the rule of Mughal Emporer around 1500 CE, a person by the name of Syed Mohammed Jawnpuri declared himself as the promised Mahdi in Makkah and India at least twice. His followers are mainly in Hyderabad India, and some other parts of India. They are known as the Mahdavi sect. They believe Syed Mohammed Jawnpuri as the promised Mahdi and claim that anyone who doesn’t accept Syed Mohammed Jawnpuri as the promised Mahdi is a kafir.

There are many seekers of truth in the Mahdaviya community who will accept the truth if the honorable ulamaa can clearly explain this matter.

It will be beneficial to list all the alaamat of Mahdi listed in the Sahih Ahadeeth and state for each alaamat (sign of Mahdi) why it is not satisfied by Syed Mohammed Jawnpuri thus disqualifying his claim of Mahdi.

The details for question 1 and 2 are requested because there are many innocent people in the Mahdaviya community who do not know the truth. And if they see the details Insha Allah they can be guided to the truth.

  1. The awaited Mahdi has not come yet. He will come towards the end of time.
  2. The character in reference is a kaafir and anyone who believes in him is also out of the fold of Islam. The Mahdi will not claim to be the Mahdi. The people will recognize him to be the Mahdi. Kindly refer to the following link for some signs of the Mahdi:
