Praying while traveling by bus

Fatwaa ID: 803

Question:
What are the rulings for bus travel, it’s a major route of travel in India for semi urban and rural areas, a person won’t be able to perform his Salah in standing position, I try to mostly travel between Fajr and Zohar mostly but sometimes it isn’t possible, I have performed my Salah in sitting position and sometimes in the direction and sometimes away or are my Salah valid? Or should I rather perform the qaza of Salah or combine them before or after the journey of travel?

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

In principle, fardh salaah must be performed while standing. If one is traveling by public transportation such as bus, then he should try to perform his salaahs at the stops or stations. If that is not feasible, then he will be excused to sit and perform salaah in the bus. However, the jurists advise that he should repeat his salaah upon reaching his destination. In private transportations, he will be obligated to stop and perform salaah appropriately. While traveling, it is not permissible to miss or delay one’s salaah, even if qadhaa is performed afterwards. One will be sinful if he does so.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
