Question:
Assalamu Alaikum
A woman is pregnant and in her first trimester. She experiences very intense nausea and there are days she can’t hold any food in her stomach, not even water. She throws up everything and too much movement makes it worse. She needs to keep eating because she gets hungry but throws up that too. The throwing up makes her extremely weak and fatigued but she’s very sad because she isn’t able to pray properly sometimes because of her condition. She gets up to pray but instead has to throw up again. She still prays her 5 daily Salah but they become qadha at times. Sometimes she resorts to sitting and praying and she’s wondering if that prayer will be valid? She also wants to know what kind of ibadah is best to do at this time.
Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.
We take note of the details of your query. May Allaah Ta’aala make it easy and bless her with a righteous healthy child. If she is finding it difficult to stand due to her situation, she would be excused to sit and perform salaah. In her current situation, she should do whatever ‘ibaadah is easy for her. The mashaayikh advise that her spirituality now has an affect on the fetus. She may consider reciting Qur’aan abundantly or listening to it. Likewise, abundance of salawaat upon Nabi (S) is essential. If she is finding it difficult to anything, the least she can do, and this is greatly virtuous, is keep her tongue moist with the remembrance of Allaah Ta’aala.
And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
