Assalamualaikum wr wb Mufti sahab,
I wanted to ask about premenstrual syndrome.
Some women experience intense mood swings, anxiety and discomfort during their periods. They understand that there’s no actual cause for their mood swings other than PMS, but it feels very real and difficult to go through.
Is there ajr for practicing sabr for such intense feelings of sadness and depression, albeit transient and not pertaining to an actual cause?
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.
Of course. A believer is rewarded for the sabr he sincerely exercises on any difficulty he experiences. This includes the inconvenience and difficulty that a woman experiences during her menstrual cycles. This includes physical, mental and emotional difficulties. Consider the following hadith,
“No fatigue, nor disease, nor sorrow, nor sadness, nor hurt, nor distress befalls a Muslim, even if it were the prick he receives from a thorn, except that Allaah expiates some of his sins for that.” [Bukhaari 5641]
And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
